Introduction to the Australian Olympic Informatics Competition and the Australian National Training Camp

1,  Competitive and Algorithmic Thinking Competition (CAT) is a one hour multiple-choice/short answer competition. No computer or programming skills are required. We need the problem-solving ability behind algorithm design.

2. Australian Informatics Olympiad (AIO) three hour programming competition. Three problems need to be solved, and the available computer languages are C, C++, Java, or Python

3. The School of Excellence held a 10 day intensive training camp in Olympic informatics at the Australian National University in Canberra. Invite approximately 25 students based on the AIO competition results.

4. Alpha Contest (AC) is usually an online selection competition for students on the December camp

5 , The Australian Invitational Informatics Olympiad (AIIO) is usually an online selection competition for students on the December camp

6,  The French Australian Regional Informatics Olympiad (FARIO) is an annual online competition held between French and Australian students, and like AIIO, is also part of the selection process for the April camp in Australia.

7. Based on the results of the three selection competitions of AC, AIIO, and FARIO, Team Selection School held its second 10 day National Olympiad Training Camp at UNSW.

8. Australian Selection Exams (SELN) are the selection exams for the Australian Informatics Olympiad national team, selecting four team members to represent Australia in the competition.

The Australian Olympic Teams Announcement (AOTA) held a celebration event at the Australian Parliament House in Canberra, officially announcing the establishment of the Australian International Informatics Olympic National Team.

10. Pre OI training camp: National team training camp before IOI

11. International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) is the highest level competition in high school computer science. Each country sends four students to form a national team to participate in a two-day, five hour competition every day.

More

We collected the State Award recipients and camp admission lists from parents across five states and put together a data analysis.

Camp Admission Summary

• Total participants: 30

• Boys: 22

• Girls: 8

State Awards Cross-Analysis

• Among the 30 camp participants, only 18 were invited to the State Awards

→ 60%

• Among the 54 students who received a State Award, only 18 were invited to the camp

→ 33%

In other words:

Having a State Award ≠ guaranteed entry into the Camp.

🏅 Differences Across States

• NSW & VIC (strong education states):

• Only Gold receives a State Award in NSW & VIC

• NSW & VIC make up the majority of national participants

• In other states, even Credit students may be invited to the State Awards

The level of competition varies significantly across regions!

👶 Age Highlights

• The youngest Gold State Award recipient is Year 7 (Sydney) — he chose to attend the Math Camp this year

• The youngest camp participant is also Year 7 (Melbourne)

Little Surprise in the Camp

• There is a pair of sisters in the camp—the older sister is a tutor, and the younger sister is a student.

How cool is that! 😍 (Their mum is a friend of mine!)

Entry Camp Score Reference

• Senior boys’ cutoff: 500

• Intermediate boys’ cutoff: 420

• Girls’ cutoff: 330
